Flock Wallpaper

Discover flock wallpaper defined by its distinctive raised fibre surface and tactile depth. Soft flocked areas absorb light while smooth, lustrous or metallic grounds reflect it differently, bringing pattern to life as the room’s light changes. Our collection includes modern geometric, abstract and animal designs alongside traditional damask and botanical flock wallpaper.

Raised pattern, tactile contrast and changing light

What Is Flock Wallpaper?

Flock wallpaper has a raised, fibre-based surface applied selectively to create pattern or texture against a contrasting ground. The pile feels soft and absorbs light, while the exposed background may appear matt, lustrous or metallic. This difference in surface is what gives flocked wallpaper its characteristic depth.

Flock describes how the surface is made rather than one decorative style. It can be used for classical damasks, narrow stripes, botanical silhouettes, animal markings and distinctly modern abstract or geometric designs.

Soft relief

The raised pile makes a pattern visible through touch, shadow and the contrast between soft and smooth surfaces.

Richer colour

Flocked areas absorb light differently from the ground, allowing dark, saturated and tonal palettes to feel particularly deep.

More than damask

Traditional ornament remains important, but contemporary flock includes stripes, checks, geometrics, abstracts and animal patterns.

Modern Flock Wallpaper

Modern flock wallpaper often replaces formal ornament with painterly marks, restrained geometry or simplified repeats. Otoko by Black Edition shows how a deep, tonal palette can let the tactile surface provide the luxury without relying on a traditional damask.

For a subtle whole-room scheme, look for a low-contrast design where the flock and ground sit close in colour. Stronger contrasts or metallic grounds make the raised pattern more visible and naturally create a focal point.

Pattern defined by surface and contrast

From Geometric Flock to Traditional Ornament

Flocked wallpaper is not restricted to one period or motif. A crisp geometric repeat can feel tailored and architectural, while damask, paisley and botanical designs use the same raised finish to emphasise scrolling outlines, leaves and formal repeats.

Scale matters as much as style. A generous design needs enough visible wall for its repeat to be understood, while a smaller motif can work more easily around doors, windows and furniture.

How the finish changes the room

Choose Pattern, Contrast and Ground Together

A flocked design can appear quiet in diffuse daylight and more pronounced under directional evening light. Consider the complete relationship between the raised pile, the base colour and any sheen in the ground rather than selecting by motif alone.

Tonal flock creates gentle shadow and is often easier to continue around a room. A light-on-dark, dark-on-light or animal design makes the motif clearer, while a reflective ground increases the contrast with the light-absorbing pile.

Related finishes, different constructions

Flock, Velvet and Flock-Effect Wallpaper

Flock normally applies fibres selectively to form a raised pattern against a different ground. Velvet wallpaper is the better destination when the dominant surface is a continuous velvet, suede or velveteen finish across the wall.

Embossing and specialist printing can imitate flock's shadow and relief without using applied fibres. Read the individual specification and order a sample when physical construction matters. This collection is intended for products identified as genuine flock, rather than every wallpaper that creates a similar visual effect.

Before ordering and installation

Sample the Surface and Follow the Product Instructions

Flocked wallpapers vary in backing, ground and manufacturer guidance. Check the supplied specification for the correct adhesive, pasting method, design direction and preparation requirements rather than applying one universal hanging method.

Order a sample

View the pile vertically in daylight and evening light. Check colour, sheen, softness and the scale of the complete repeat before committing.

Check rolls and direction

Confirm the product code, batch and colour before hanging. Some flock wallpapers are reverse rolled, so establish the correct design direction first.

Protect the face

The raised surface needs clean, careful handling. Avoid rubbing the pile or allowing adhesive to dry on the face, and consider an experienced decorator for specialist finishes.

Samples and selection

See the Pile, Ground and Contrast at Home

A screen cannot accurately show soft pile, relief or the changing contrast between a flocked motif and its ground. View a sample upright beside paint, upholstery and lighting already in the room.

Use the sample to judge the physical finish, then check the full room image and repeat dimensions to understand how the design will read across a larger wall.

Frequently asked questions

Flock Wallpaper FAQs

What is flock wallpaper?

Flock wallpaper has a raised fibre surface applied to selected areas of the design. The soft pile contrasts with the ground beneath it, creating pattern through texture, shadow and changing light as well as colour.

Is flock wallpaper only available in traditional damask patterns?

No. Damask is closely associated with flock, but modern flock wallpaper also includes stripes, checks, geometrics, botanical silhouettes, animal markings and abstract designs.

What is the difference between flock and velvet wallpaper?

Flock normally forms a raised pattern against a contrasting ground. Velvet wallpaper generally describes a more continuous velvet, suede or velveteen surface. Some specialist products combine techniques and can belong to both collections.

Can flock wallpaper be used across a whole room?

Yes. Tonal designs and smaller repeats can work well across several walls. Large, high-contrast or metallic flock patterns create more visual movement and may be easier to balance on a clearer feature wall.

Does flock wallpaper look different as the light changes?

Yes. The pile absorbs light while a smooth or metallic ground reflects it differently. Always view a sample vertically in both natural and artificial light before choosing a colourway.

Is flock wallpaper difficult to hang?

Its raised face requires careful, clean handling, and products vary in backing and recommended adhesive. Check the manufacturer's instructions, batch and design direction before starting; for valuable specialist wallcoverings, professional installation is sensible.

How should flock wallpaper be cleaned?

Follow the care instructions for the individual product. Where permitted, light dust can usually be removed gently with a clean, soft brush or a vacuum attachment used without pressure. Avoid rubbing, soaking or using cleaning products unless the manufacturer specifically approves them.

Should I order a sample first?

Yes. A screen cannot accurately show pile, relief, sheen or changing colour. Use a sample to judge the physical finish, then check the full room image and repeat dimensions to understand how the pattern will read across the wall.
