Depth, contrast and texture
Choosing Black Fabric for Your Interior
Black can define the outline of a chair, give a curtain pattern its structure or connect a scheme through small repeated details. The amount of black matters as much as the shade: a pale cloth with a fine black motif has a very different presence from a dense black velvet.
Begin with the surface and the balance of colour. Woven cream threads can soften a dark fabric, while a smooth or lustrous finish catches highlights. Compare black with the materials already in your room rather than expecting every fabric described as black to match.
Deep and softly textured black
A plain black gives a clear outline. A flecked or raised weave introduces lighter points that soften the overall effect. View both from across the room as well as close up.
Black and white
Stripes, checks and geometric designs range from fine outlines to broad areas of contrast. Ivory and cream create a gentler combination than bright white.
Black with warm colour
Tan, ochre and warm metallic accents can balance black. Distinguish a golden-coloured yarn from a reflective metallic finish when choosing your sample.

Pattern at the window
Black Curtain Fabric and the Balance of Light
A black pattern on a natural ground introduces definition while leaving plenty of lighter cloth visible. Look at the full repeat: a small cutting may show only a dark motif or only the background, giving a misleading impression of the finished curtains.
For a stronger frame around the window, consider a darker ground or a plain black. Hold samples vertically and look at them with daylight behind them. The weave, lining and folds all affect how much detail you see and how dark the fabric appears.
Black face fabric does not automatically provide blackout. If light control is important, discuss the lining and complete curtain construction. Allow room for the curtains to stack back so the treatment works with the window when open as well as closed.

Warmth and contrast
Black and White, Black and Gold, and Animal Patterns
For a monochrome scheme, compare the light colour as carefully as the black. A cool white can feel crisp against black joinery, while ivory works more softly with aged timber and stone. Mixing several whites without checking them together can make their differences unexpectedly noticeable.
Black with tan, ochre or gold-coloured detail introduces warmth. Animal-inspired stripes and spots can bring these colours together in one fabric. Use the pattern on a chair or cushion if you want a smaller focal point, and keep nearby large surfaces quieter.
Coordinate by repeating one colour and changing the scale. A large black motif can sit alongside a narrow stripe or small check, but compare the full designs before ordering. Gold in a colourway name does not necessarily mean that the fabric contains metallic yarn.

Texture and everyday use
Choosing Black Upholstery Fabric
Black upholstery shows its character through texture. A flat weave, raised pattern and velvet pile catch light differently, so two similar blacks can look quite distinct on a curved chair or sofa. A cream thread running through the weave can make a black fabric read lighter from a distance.
For velvet, rotate the sample and stroke the pile gently to compare its appearance from different directions. Ask your upholsterer about pile direction and pattern placement across separate panels before the fabric quantity is calculated.
Choose for the actual piece and how it will be used. Check the product’s upholstery recommendation, care instructions and stated performance information. Dark colour alone does not establish durability or stain resistance, and pale lint or pet hair may be more noticeable against a dark plain.
Make the contrast work
Three Checks Before You Choose
Black or charcoal?
Charcoal is usually a softer dark grey, although supplier names vary. Compare samples against a true black object and your room’s finishes. Browse Grey Fabric if a gentler dark neutral is what you need.
Close up and across the room
Fine black-and-white patterns can merge visually into grey at a distance. A larger motif retains stronger contrast. Judge the design at the distance from which you will normally see it.
One piece or a repeated detail?
A dark sofa creates a large area of colour. Smaller black details in cushions, a border or a blind can connect existing furniture without making every fabric equally dark.

Coordinate the scheme
Made-to-Measure Curtains, Roman Blinds and Cushions
A patterned upholstered piece can provide the starting point for your window fabrics and cushions. Pick out its black or ivory in a quieter weave, or repeat the pattern at a different scale. The photographed ottoman illustrates colour coordination; each fabric still needs checking for its proposed use.
TM Interiors offers made-to-measure curtains, Roman blinds and cushions using suitable fabrics. We can discuss curtain headings, lining and interlining, plus borders or trims that relate to the rest of your scheme. For a Roman blind, check how a strong motif will sit both lowered and folded.
Send your preferred fabric references and project measurements to info@tm-interiors.co.uk. We can help you narrow the selection and confirm the details needed for a quotation.

See the Texture as Well as the Black
Order available samples from the product pages and place them beside your paint, flooring and existing furnishings. Compare a plain, a textured weave and a patterned option if you are unsure how much contrast you want.
Check them in daylight and under your usual evening lighting. View curtain samples vertically and upholstery samples over a curve. Use the full product photograph and repeat dimensions alongside the cutting, especially for large motifs and designs with several colours.

Frequently asked questions
Black Fabric FAQs
What is the difference between black and charcoal fabric?
Charcoal generally describes a dark grey, while black gives a deeper contrast. Supplier names are not standardised, and mixed yarns can soften the appearance. Compare physical samples rather than relying on a shade name alone.
Will black curtains make my room too dark?
The effect depends on the amount of black, the background colour and the window treatment. A black motif on an ivory ground feels different from a dark plain. Compare samples vertically and allow enough space for the curtains to stack clear of the glass.
Is black curtain fabric the same as blackout fabric?
No. Black describes the face colour, while blackout describes light-blocking performance. Confirm the fabric specification and discuss an appropriate lining or complete window treatment if you need to reduce incoming light.
Which colours go with black fabric?
White and ivory create monochrome contrast. Tan, warm wood, ochre and gold-coloured accents introduce warmth, while a small amount of another colour can become a focal point. Start with a secondary colour already present in your chosen pattern.
Is every black fabric suitable for upholstery?
No. Check each product’s recommended use and discuss the intended furniture with your upholsterer. Colour and appearance do not establish durability, care requirements or suitability for a particular project.
How do I combine black-and-white patterns?
Vary the size of the motifs and repeat a shared background colour. A broad stripe can work with a smaller check or spot, while a quieter plain gives the scheme breathing space. Compare the full repeats as well as samples.
Can you make curtains and Roman blinds in black fabric?
Yes, using suitable fabrics. We can help with selection, headings, lining and finishing details for made-to-measure curtains, Roman blinds and coordinating cushions. Send the fabric references and project measurements for advice and a quotation.
How should I clean black furnishing fabric?
Follow the individual product’s care instructions. Do not assume that a dark fabric hides every mark or can be washed. Confirm how the finished item, including any lining or trim, should be maintained before ordering.
