Begin with the fabric and the window

Choosing Fabric for Roman Blinds

A Roman blind presents furnishing fabric differently from a curtain. When lowered, it creates a broad, relatively uninterrupted panel; when raised, the cloth forms a sequence of horizontal folds. Colour, pattern, weight and handle should therefore be considered in both positions.

Not every furnishing fabric will suit every finished blind. The proposed width and drop, fabric construction, thickness, repeat and selected lining can all influence whether the material will make and fold successfully.

Pattern at full scale

Consider how much of the repeat will be visible when the blind is lowered and where important motifs should sit within the finished width.

Weight and handle

Very thick, heavily embellished or unusually flexible fabrics may respond differently when folded and should be checked against the proposed specification.

Light and lining

The face fabric and lining work together. Standard, blackout and more substantial constructions create different levels of body and light control.

Pattern Scale and Placement

Floral, botanical and pictorial fabrics can turn a Roman blind into a strong decorative feature. A large design may show only one part of its repeat within a narrow window, while a smaller motif can create a more consistent effect across several blinds.

Centring and placement can affect the fabric quantity. If several blinds will sit together, decide whether their motifs should align or whether each blind can be positioned independently. A sample is useful for colour and texture, but consult the published repeat or a larger cutting when scale is important.

Stripes, Geometrics and Directional Designs

Stripes and geometrics can emphasise the clean architecture of a Roman blind. Vertical stripes can add height, while horizontal elements draw attention to the width and the stacked folds.

Directional designs require accurate cutting and alignment. Remember that part of the pattern becomes concealed within the folds when the blind is raised, so judge the design both as a complete lowered panel and as a more compact arrangement above the window.

Plain and Textured Blind Fabrics

Plain and subtly textured fabrics allow the form of the blind and the wider interior to lead. Linen-rich cloths, fine weaves, velvets and softly textured plains can each create a different balance of structure, softness and changing light.

Texture can become more visible when daylight passes across the window, while pile and surface direction may alter how colour appears. Check a sample vertically in the intended room and view it during both daylight and evening conditions.

Order Samples Before You Configure

Screen colour cannot show the precise texture, weight or finish of a furnishing fabric. Order samples where available and hold them vertically at the window rather than assessing them only on a table.

For a large repeat, the sample may show only a small part of the design. Use the product images and repeat dimensions alongside the cutting, and contact us if you need help understanding how the design may sit across your proposed blind.

Create Your Made-to-Measure Roman Blind

Once you have found an eligible fabric, begin from its product page and select the made-to-measure Roman blind option. Enter the required dimensions and work through the available construction and lining choices for that fabric.

Visit our Roman blinds service page for an overview of measuring, fitting position, lining, borders, trimmings and other available options. If you are unsure about the fabric, dimensions or specification, ask us before completing the order.

Connect the whole room

Coordinate Blinds with Curtains and Furnishings

A Roman blind can use the same fabric as nearby curtains or introduce a complementary pattern, colour or texture. Cushions and an upholstered headboard can carry the scheme further into the room. When several applications are planned, confirm that each chosen fabric is suitable for its individual purpose rather than assuming one specification covers everything.

Frequently asked questions

Blinds Fabric FAQs

What fabric is best for Roman blinds?

The best fabric depends on the dimensions, required lining and intended appearance. Stable furnishing fabrics with a suitable weight and handle often work well, but the individual product and finished specification should be checked before ordering.

Can I use patterned fabric for a Roman blind?

Yes. Florals, geometrics, stripes and other patterns can work very effectively. Consider the repeat, direction and placement across the finished blind, including how the pattern will appear when raised.

Can Roman blinds be made in velvet or linen?

Many velvet, linen and linen-blend fabrics can be used, subject to their individual construction and the proposed blind specification. Pile direction, weight, movement and tendency to crease may need consideration.

Can I configure my blind online?

Yes. Where a fabric is eligible for the made-to-measure service, begin from its product page, select the Roman blind option and enter your dimensions to see the available specification choices.

Can I choose blackout lining?

Blackout options are available for suitable fabrics and specifications. Blackout lining reduces light passing through the blind itself, although some light can remain around the edges depending on the fitting position and window.

Should I order a sample first?

Yes, where sampling is available. A sample helps you assess colour, texture and weight at the window, although a small cutting may not show the complete repeat of a large design.

Can you help check whether a fabric is suitable?

Yes. Send us the chosen product, required width and drop, fitting position and any lining or finishing preferences. We can help identify questions that should be resolved before the blind is ordered.
