Trellis Fabric

Trellis fabrics and lattice work patterns were a much-favoured fabric design in both Rococo and Neo-Classical interiors of the 18th Century, especially for upholstery. Typical designs from this period feature small leaves or lines, characterized by their elegant, symmetrical shapes, restrained ornamentation and cool, pale colours which proved enduringly fashionable throughout the century. In the 19th Century it was felt all ornament should be based on geometric construction and this was further progressed with the Arts and Crafts Movement and the likes of William Morris. Fabric designs therefore included trellis and lattice designs used as a framework for motifs of some description such as fleur-de-lis, thistles and pomegranates. Trellis fabrics could therefore be considered as essentially geometric fabrics embellished with ornaments and motifs.
