Hanging Lining Paper

Lining a wall prior to papering is a necessary first stage if you are hanging, embossed or luxury wallcoverings from brands like Arte or Elitis, or just if the wall has imperfections that might show through a thin wallpaper.

Always to remember to hang the lining paper horizontally, if your hanging the wallpaper vertically of course, so that the joins cannot align with those in the top layer where you will be hanging wallpaper.

  • Mark a horizontal line on the wall roll-width from the ceiling.
  • Holding the concertina-folded length in one hand start at the top right-hand corner of wall if you're right-handed (if you're handed, start from the top left), align. the bottom edge with the marked line.
  • Smooth the paper onto the wall with paperhanger's brush, working from the centre towards the edges of the paper.
  • Work along the wall gradually, unfolding the length as you do so.
  • Take care not to stretch or tear the wet paper.
  • Use the brush to gently tap the paper into the corner at each end.
  • Use the point of a pair of scissors to lightly mark the corner, peel back the paper, and trim to the line.
  • Brush the paper back in place.
  • You will have to perform a similar operation along the ceiling if the paper overlaps slightly.
  • Work down the wall, butting each strip against the last of leaving a minute gap between the lengths.
  • Trim the bottom length to the skirting.
  • Leave the lining paper to dry out for 24 hours before covering with your choice of wallpaper.
