The Archive Prints collection celebrates the transition of Morris & Co. from wallpapers to the exquisite world of hand-block-printed fabrics. Every fabric tells a story of Morris's partnership with Bannister Hall and his eventual establishment at Merton Abbey. While retaining the charm of block printing, the collection introduces designs influenced by Morriss tapestries and embroideries, freshly painted by the current design team. From drapes to upholstery, it's a blend of history and artistry in every metre.

Morris And Co Archive Prints Fabric Collection
Morris Archive Prints, from Morris & Co. features some hand block-printed fabrics inspired of course by the late great William Morris. In producing the Archive Prints Collection, the design studio responsible have retained the characteristics of block printing and some of the original colourations. Not only does the collection feature original designs, but new designs inspired by his woven tapestries and embroideries, painted by the current design team. Bluebell originally known as Columbine was based on a collection of Rhenish 15th century printed linens that Morris first admired, the design has an elegant symmetrical pattern printed with a subtle shading to reproduce the aged patina found in some of Morris original fabrics today. Kennet is just one of many designs named after the tributaries connected to the River Thames that were so important throughout Morris life, the design was originally produced at Merton Abbey using the indigo discharge method. Designed by Morris in 1875 Marigold is a lively monotone print and one of the few designs Morris produced for both wallpaper and fabric. Other popular designs also found in the range include Strawberry Thief fabric originally an indigo discharge printed fabric it has now been reproduced on 100% cotton with subtle textures to retain the look of the original hand-print. Or the Kelmscott Tree fabric where the trellis background on the original has been removed and the design repainted creating a wonderful arrangement of trees birds and flowers. Plus Scroll which is smaller in scale and more delicate than many of his other designs the gently meandering layout of leaves and marigold flowers on a clean background comes in a range of rich Morris colours, and reflects William Morris's fascination with medieval book illustration and can be traced to the 1871 wallpaper design.
