The key element of choosing a character of a room should be an honest reflection of your own personality and style.

However, it can be overwhelming for some seeing designs and ready-made ideas on window treatments, which is why some people require the help of an interior designer, or professional curtain and blinds company, as sometimes ideas from magazines or pin-interest boards and Instagram pages may not be both practical, and or appropriate, to your desired look.

A good curtain company or interior designer should be the first to make an assessment on whether one style or another is a good choice, and here are some guidelines on creating that all important window treatment.

Purpose of the Window Treatment

A starting point to is to ask some questions about what is the purpose of the window treatment, what are you trying to do with the room, and what is priority, so here are some points you may wish to consider:

  • Privacy: since we all can be different, privacy maybe a number one concern for some less so for others, which can affect suitable choice of window treatment.
  • Maximize Light: if the room does not get enough natural light then you can’t go with heavy window treatments, as it won’t reflect light.
  • The View: is the aim to cover up the window to draw away from ugly views with appropriate window treatments or just give a simple frame to a beautiful view.
  • Morning Sun: some rooms may be over lit especially in the summer from the morning sun so it’s better to pick a good treatment that control light particularly for a baby or small child.
  • Obstructions: are there any obvious obstructions in the window that we must consider, find out now to know the best window treatment solution.
  • Draught Exclusion: window treatments are an ideal way of controlling draught especially older properties as this is very common to them.
  • Acoustic: some window treatments may improve your room’s acoustics and can reduce unwanted noises.
  • Kitchen and Bathrooms: window treatments for kitchen and bathrooms should be designed well. Take into consideration that these rooms can cause mess like direct splashing that will lead to staining of fabrics and other concerns.
Addressing The Window

The most important factors to consider when designing a window treatment or choosing curtains is the windows shape and size. There are various types of windows and sometimes it helps to visualize it by drawing a sketch or elevation to see how it will look like with the proposed design.

When you have decided on the design and you come to measure for your window treatment, here are a key list of points to remember when measuring up a window that can influence your final choice and decision:

  • Shape of The Window:  depending one the window type and style some windows may not be covered by heavy fabrics and it may even look good on its own, or with simple blinds.
  • How Do The Windows Open: make sure that your window treatments won’t obstruct your window opening. Window opening may be inwards or outwards.
  • What Is The View Outside: you may disguise an ugly outlook or retain the beauty of the view.
  • Wall Space: consider the clear width between windows and wall space from the headroom above it.
  • Obstructions: take into consideration the positions of radiators, pipes, sockets, etc to avoid interference with the hang and drape of the curtain.
  • Structural Layout: consider any another thing that may affect your curtain design like the positioning of any skirting, dado rails or cornice.
  • Check the Light: Inspect the quality and amount of light entering in each room.
  • Fixing / Installation: determine if there is enough space to fix the window treatment. Consider if you have the option to fix through the ceiling, through the wall or both.
