A Review of the Palladio Wallpaper Collection from Zoffany
Introducing Palladio Wallpapers by Zoffany
We look back at the Palladio collection of wallpapers from Zoffany released in Autumn/Winter 2020. This impressive collection is a 'Best of British' showcase from Zoffany pulling inspiration from previous Palladio collections and pairing it with new designs. The first Palladio collection dates to 1955 and was a collection of wallpapers geared towards architects, and it drew on the recent movement of that time to reinvent wallpaper as a bold modern idiom, suitable for public life as well as private spaces. Six of the designs in this collection of Zoffany Wallpaper have been selected from the previous Palladio wallpaper collections, each chosen by the design duo Robert and Roger Nicholson.
Montacute
The inspiration for the Montacute wallpaper is thought to be the Elizabethan mansion of the same name located in Somerset. The Montacute wallpaper features rows of statutes in arcaded niches similar to those found on the Elizabethan mansion, where the statues can be found nestled between the windows of the third floor. Montacute is available in two colourways: Flint Grey/Ink and City Grey/Fig Grey
Royal Exchange
The Royal Exchange design dates from an original design by Robert Nicholson from 1965. Robert is beleived to have been inspired by a famous 1644 etching of London's Royal Exchange by Wenceslaus Holland. The addition of gold is intended to represent the wealth found in Exchange Square. The Royal Exchange wallcovering is available in three colourways: Platinum Grey/Gold, Snow/Architect’s White and Taylor’s Grey/Platinum
Medallion
The etched roundels in the Medallion desing feature neoclasical lions arranged in rows and columns. The trompe loile design gives each medallion a three-dimensional feel. The wallpaper is available in three colourways: Malachite/Gold, Silver/Perfect White and Lazuli/Nickle
Sicilian Lion
The lion is a renowned symbol of British identity and the Sicilian Lion in this design, originally released in 1956, has been on of the most popular Palladio patterns. The lion has a baroque style feel presumably taking influence from similar lion's found in Baroque architecture dotted through Siciliy. The Scicilian wallcovering in this current Palldio Collection has been reduced in scale from the three foot high original to a size more versatile for modern interiors. The striking design is available in three colourways: Cinnabar/Bronze, Serpentine/Gold and Bone Black/Copper
Columns
The corinthian-style columns in the Columns wallpaper are inspired by classical architecture. The original 1956 design has been brought up to date with the additon of metallic inks and contemporary colour. It is available in three colourways: Olive/Bone Black, Empire Grey/Architect’s White and Vine Black/Antique Gold.
The Palladio Collection is completed by the addition of Impact and Precarious Pangolins. Impact has a distinctly 1960s look and feel. Designed by Judith Cash and first released in 1967 it features an interlocking geometric design inspired by Op-Art, one of the trending art movements of the time, which used geometric forms to create optical illusions. Precarious Pangolins was designed by Sam Wilde to draw attention to the most trafficked animal. The brightly coloured wallpaper shows Pangolins making their way across a game of metaphorical snakes and ladders between fruits and foliage.
